About

THUNDERCAT IN CONCERT:

Genre-spanning bassist, singer, and producer Thundercat is known for keeping audiences on their toes with his head-spinning variety and eclecticism. From skittering fusion and squelching funk to synth-laden electro, one thing remains constant in his music -- his virtuosic bass playing. He's a true master of the instrument and it provides the backbone for his diverse sound, tying songs like "Oh Sheit It's X" and "Walkin'" together despite their markedly different vibes. In 2014 Thundercat provided tour support to his longtime collaborator Flying Lotus, and his stellar performances and futuristic stage wear on the road proved he's as impressive in concert as he is in the studio.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Los Angeles-born multi-talent Thundercat, a.k.a Stephen Bruner, fell in love with bass at an early age. In his teens he became the bassist of iconic LA thrash band Suicidal Tendencies, whose lineup also included his brother Ronald Jr. on drums. By the mid-'00s he was a sought-after session player, appearing on acclaimed albums by Erykah Badu and his Brainfeeder label mate Flying Lotus. Bruner made his solo debut as Thundercat in 2011 with the album The Golden Age of Apocalypse, a kaleidoscopic slice of bass-heavy fusion and electro that was a huge critical success. Following buzzworthy appearances at festivals like Coachella and Austin City Limits, he released his 2013 sophomore album Apocalypse to another round of critical praise.  A seasoned performer known for his mean bass playing and outré stagewear, Thundercat continues to get ticket buyers moving and shaking on his must-see tours.

  • Amazing everywhere

by Kay Abade on 2024-08-25Rating: 5 out of 5

I’m reading these reviews and wondering who many of the reviewers are talking about. I have seen him in different countries and at many venues around Toronto and he has never been less than amazing. The only problem with his most recent show, the one at History, was THE CROWD bc like at the Lacy show, most of them didn’t know any of his music besides Funny Thing. To anyone who has never seen him, don’t let these reviews sway you, he’s amazing. If you have and it was trash, I suggest giving a second chance but obv that’s just me.

  • Cacophony

    by G. E. on 2022-08-21Rating: 1 out of 5

I attended Thundercat’s concert in Toronto, Canada at Roger’s Center. I can barely define this as music, more like a complete cacophony 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • Pure fusion joy

by Dringus on 2022-08-10Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Thundercat brings a diverse crowd, essentially tricking them into coming to a ferocious jazz fusion shred fest. Just the best

  • Disappointingly Dull

by Radders on 2022-08-08Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 2 out of 5

We were hoping for a funk, chilled, jazzy show. But EVRY track Thundercat played lasted about a minute before descending into a self indulgent solo, that went on for another 6/7 minutes. And then between each tune he would have really dull, self indulgent chat about all the amazing things he’s done, or his cats. There is no doubt he is a really talented musician, but he really needs to work on his showmanship. It was a really boring show.

  • Thundercat Experience

Little too many guitar solos and the speakers/ sound quality was really disappointing

  • Great performance hidden by poor production

by Pao on 2022-08-08Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 1 out of 5

I was really looking forward to this show. Thundercat is a really innovative Jazz/R&B artist, and I was excited to hear songs from the album. Almost immediately I could tell the sound was off, and hoped it would be fixed throughout the show, but it was not. Extremely boomy in bass, very little clarity, overall much too loud. The keys could be made out, but it overall the mix was in a word, senseless.

  • banger show

by Marshall on 2022-08-07Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

opener was sick, thundercat had great stage presence and all three instrumentalists were killer at what they did. intermission between songs was sick too as he was just talking about what he loved and life n shit. all the songs were amazing too, it felt like a high intensity jazz performance with insane improv between all three performers. Highlight song was overseas, as he played it like a slower ballad rather than the usual groove it has, which gave me a whole different view and appreciation for the song

  • Terrible sound

by CaptainHowdy on 2022-08-07Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 1 out of 5

First 20 rows all complained about the terrible mix. Virtually no audible vocals and way too much bottom-end bass. Ruined the whole show.

  • Muddy sound

by MusoMama on 2022-08-07Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

I have only seen choral music at the Orpheum so I was surprised this venue was chosen for Thundercat. After Kimmortal’s plucky performance my partner and I looked at each other like — the good sound must’ve been reserved for the headliner! But, no so. The drums were really loud (insane chops tho!) and the bass (we were there for it) was muddy at best and the vocals were so far back in the mix (both acts) which was disappointing. The energy was amazing, we were likely some of the oldest ones in the crowd and/but something was lost on us…
