About

Widely considered a feminist icon, Grammy winner Ani DiFranco is the mother of the DIY movement, being one of the first artists to create her own record label in 1990. While she has been known as the "Little Folksinger," her music has embraced punk, funk, hip hop, jazz, soul, electronica and even more distant sounds. Her collaborators have included everyone from Utah Phillips to legendary R&B saxophonist Maceo Parker to Prince. Her memoir No Walls and the Recurring Dream was a New York Times Top 10 best seller in 2019, and her debut children's book The Knowing is out now. DiFranco recently completed a 5-month run on Broadway as 'Persephone' in the Tony and Grammy Award-winning Best Musical, Hadestown. Her 23rd album Unprecedented Sh!t is out now, and a second children's book Show Up and Vote was released in August of 2024.

  • Ani rocked ...again!

by sDarlin1 on 2009-10-29The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Ani with my daughter....for the 2nd time! the first was 10 years ago...when my daughter was 7...although I may have jumped the gun abit, she must have had it stick with her because asked me if we could go again this time! We went, we sat and enjoyed her messages of strength and selfdiscovery! Her music, musicians, all was grand! My daughter is now 17 and the message I wanted her to grow up with seems to have seeped into her own being! Task accomplished! We both enjoyed once again! 2 thumbs up! and 3 cheers for a great venue! Thanks to Ani, the promoters and the powers that be!

  • Ani still has it

by Kimbar on 2009-10-28The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

A baby and a marriage later, she may not be as angry but she still knows whats important and she still tells it like it is. As she says, "if your still angry, you're fucking something up"....Stellar lyrics, magnetic voice and brilliant guitar playing all still prevail. Ani still rocks !! .....only complaint was a poor mixing job - way too much kick and bass drowned out rest of the instruments

  • She's Brilliant & We Were Mirrors

by Artspoken on 2009-10-28The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Ani is incredible. It's hard to believe that so much energy & emotion can spill forth from such a small package. I'd read before how her diminutive stature almost seems to accentuate the massive music she plays by contrast, but I'd never really appreciated it until now. I can't believe that it has taken me this long to see her live. There is no question that Ani is a powerhouse and that her music is some of the purest of our generation. There was one false note in the show, however. I had heard about "November 5th" and was quite excited to hear it for the first time live but I have to say that it didn't live up to the rest of her music. Like many anthems, it was a bit forced and lacked Ani's usual depth - both lyrically and musically. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd imagine that the message is perhaps a bit too dear to her intellectually for her to have allowed herself to approach it with the same grit that she normally pours into her music. This is a shame, because I couldn't support the message more. With that one quibble set aside, Ani's performance was everything I could have hoped for. The numerous cries of "I love you Ani" coming from the audience were well justified.

  • Ani is the Goddess!!

Ani rocks so much! She played so much new stuff and it is great. Usually you want to hear stuff you know, but with Ani's music the stuff we had never heard was a sgood as all the old favoriites! I love her!

  • Difranco's got another one

"Everytime I open my mouth, I take off my clothes".....enough said. Amazing show!

  • Difranco - back in top form

by zedoe on 2009-10-28The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Marriage and motherhood seem to suit Difranco. Her melodic and rhythmic music is back, full force. Her high-energy sound was missed by this listener when she departed into jazz tones, abstract lyrics and the use of sub-par back-up musicians. Great to see her back in top form with musicians behind her that can keep up but not compete for the spotlight.

  • Ani mixes up the magic

Ani Difranco does not disappoint. After waiting thirteen years since first purchasing an Ani album i was pretty excited about the show this past Tuesday night. Having introduced her to dozens of friends over the years, it was my particular pleasure to go see her live for the first time myself. She played a magical set, with a selection of songs spread from throughout her prolific career. Backed by three male players and boasting a sweet-souled, nymph called Anais Mitchell from the Righteous Babe stable of solid musicians to open the set, Ani held the stage powerfully. Mixing some of her self-deprecating humour with a set guaranteed to please old and new fans alike. She played Fuel, Your Next Bold Move, You Had Time and took requests, including asking me to repeat mine and then satisfying me to no end with her solo rendition of Garden of Simple, a few songs after her band left the stage and she astounded and rocked the mostly female audience with her anthem to failed relationships, Gravel. Though there were plenty of songs i did not know, her powerful lyrical twists and personal revelations keep astounding, twenty years into her career. A charismatic presence, she seemed perfectly comfortable in her functional cargo pants and sleeveless tee. Rocking out with energetic flourishes of her guitar, Ani moved effortlessly between the mic and built the energy with her sidemen like the seasoned performer she is. Please go see this tour, it will not disappoint.

  • Ani Difranco kicked ass!!!

Ani is growing musically & what a show!!! She is one of the best guitar players around!! Her lyrics mean something and she is very real. She isn't as hardcore as she used to be, but this is a sign of her happiness & maturity! YAY Ani!!! She will always "have it"!!!!

Ani truly puts her heart and soul into her lyrics, music and performances. To bare witness to that raw power makes Ani performances a must see. She is loved and she loves, which is obvious by everyone in attendance.

She know how to play a guitar, in fact she owns the stage with her guitar, and her voice. Her band was great. It was a show to be remembered.
